Office of Diversity and Inclusion

What We Do

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion works as a partner to advance concrete actions across academic and administrative departments and offices to strengthen inclusion and diversity at Brown.

ODI works in partnership with departments and offices to steward the University’s commitment and responsibility to foster diverse and inclusive living, learning and working environments.

This work includes:

  • Establishing cultures of trust, welcoming, and belonging that enable a productive living and learning community
  • Regularly surveying the campus climate, providing data-rich assessments of the campus climate to the community, and establishing a better understanding of bias, harassment, and discrimination in our community
  • Providing resources to members of the community who experience bias, discrimination, or harassment
  • Hosting and supporting events that promote conversations about — and commitments to — diversity and inclusion as part of a strong academic community where everyone can thrive
  • Supporting recruitment of world-class and diverse faculty and staff, and ensuring that search processes are free of bias and discrimination
  • Supporting the activities of the Diversity and Inclusion Oversight Board, the President’s Advisory Council on Diversity, and employee affinity groups
  • Stewarding the University’s Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, or DIAP (formally, Pathways to Diversity and Inclusion: An Action Plan for Brown University)
  • Managing Brown’s Affirmative Action Plan (for employment), including compliance monitoring and government reporting
  • Serve as the home for the Leadership Alliance, the Brown-Tougaloo Partnership and other programming and initiatives meant to build pathways of talent in higher education
